Cooler Inflation Sparks a Fragile Chip Rebound
Softer June inflation lifted chips 2.6%, but the canary stocks stayed on the floor. One-month crash odds ease to 29%, back under the 30% line.
The risk read for this session
These are model estimates, not forecasts anyone can guarantee, and not investment advice. The dot before each probability is its band: 🟢 low · 🟡 moderate · 🟠 high · 🔴 very high, with thresholds set separately for each scenario. SOXX is the main US semiconductor ETF, the basket I track; from peak is the fall from the highest close of this cycle; VIX is the market’s fear gauge; the high-yield spread is the extra interest riskier companies pay to borrow, my early-warning line for funding stress. My internal alert is at Level 2, on a scale where 3 is the highest.
⚠️ ALERT LEVEL 2 ACTIVE
Level 2 — the second of my three alert levels — stays on. The one-month sector-crash odds ease from 32% to 29%, back below the 30% line, and the raw picture softened: participation improved enough that one of my signal families left the "under tension" list. But the regime does NOT step down. A regime only de-escalates when four recovery conditions are all met, and today just one is — so ALERT holds, and so does the red fragility signal. This is not a sell call; it means tight daily monitoring. The highest level has not triggered.
🎈 FRAGILITY NOTE (Family F red)
The "overinflated balloon" signal — how much air sits under prices — stays red: SOXX still trades about 47% above its 200-day average. When there is this much air beneath prices, drops can arrive without warning — I saw one Monday. Today's bounce doesn't change that: it came on light volume (0.74× the average), the kind of rebound that can fade.
SUMMARY (3 lines): Regime ALERT (confirmed), Level 2 active, one-month crash odds ease from 32% to 29%. Tuesday brought a relief rebound after cooler-than-expected US inflation: SOXX +2.58% to $567.92, back above its 50-day "waterline," led by the memory and equipment groups that were crushed Monday. But volume was light and the "canary" stocks didn't join. Next up: TSMC earnings midweek.
WHAT HAPPENED
The catalyst was macro. June US inflation (CPI) came in at −0.4% month-on-month and +3.5% year-on-year, below the +3.8% expected, with energy prices falling. The market read it as relief on the Federal Reserve: the odds of a 0.25-point rate hike at the July 28-29 meeting collapsed from 42% to 17% (a September hike stays priced at ~60%). Treasury yields fell — 10-year to 4.58%, 2-year to 4.18%. Chips rebounded: SOXX +2.58% to $567.92, Nvidia +4.06% to $211.80, back above its 50-day average. The rebound was led by the two groups that took the worst of Monday's rout — memory (+3.3% on average: SanDisk +5.0%, Micron +4.9%) and equipment (+3.4%: KLAC, Applied Materials, ASML). Dell jumped +7.1%. The clearest brake was outside AI chips: IBM −25% on a Q2 profit warning (weak software/infrastructure), which pinned the Dow flat (+0.02%) — a signal of soft software demand worth noting. Broad indices: S&P 500 +0.38% to 7,543.59 (−0.87% from its June 2 record close); Nasdaq Composite +0.90%; VIX down to 16.50. Under the surface, two cautions stand out. First, breadth improved sharply — 61% of my US universe rose, up from ~12% Monday — but equal-weight indices trailed cap-weight (QQQE vs QQQ, RSP vs SPY), so leadership was concentrated in chips rather than broad. Second, the "canaries" — five stocks that tend to crack first — did NOT join the bounce: they fell 0.95% on average against SOXX's +2.58%, and Oracle set a new one-year low at $127.94. A rebound the most fragile names skip is a rebound to distrust.
🚦 TRAFFIC LIGHT — 9 SIGNALS IN 6 FAMILIES
🟢 S1 Moving averages (A, was 🟡): SOXX $567.92 back above its 50-day ($562.43, +1.0%) and 200-day; Nvidia $211.80 above its 50-day ($209.33, +1.2%) and 200-day. A "fragile green": one session, on below-average volume.
🟠 S2 Structure (A, =): lower highs intact; a higher low (560.24), but the $590.36 resistance is unreclaimed and no pivot bottom is confirmed.
🟡 S3 Momentum (A, = improving): SOXX daily MACD −7.87 histogram, still negative but improving (from −8.71); Nvidia's MACD above its signal line (+1.67); daily RSI 48 (SOXX) and 56 (NVDA); no weekly divergence.
🟡 S4 Breadth (B, was 🟠): 61% of US universe names rose (from ~12%), but equal-weight trailed cap-weight — improvement, not broad health.
🟡 S5 Rotation/canaries (B, was 🟠): the canary basket is −6.4 points relative to SOXX over 20 sessions; one canary (Oracle) at a 52-week low; the group did not join today's bounce. Better than 🟠, but not clear.
🟠 S6 Distribution (C, =): four "distribution days" (heavy institutional selling) still active; none added on an up day.
🟢 S7 Volatility (D, =): the VIX ("fear gauge") closed 16.50, −3.9%, below 20; the VIXY/VIXM proxy eased to 1.44. With Family F red, a low VIX reads as complacency — noted, not counted as reassurance.
🟢 S8 Credit (E, =): the HYG/LQD ratio (high yield vs investment grade) was flat at 0.7432 — no flight from risk. HY OAS 267 bp (latest July 7).
🔴 S9 Euphoria (F, =): extension +46.8% above the 200-day, above the red threshold. Out of the tally, but the fragility note is mandatory.
SYNTHESIS: two families under tension (A via structure, C via distribution), neither a leading indicator; Family F compromised (out of tally). Family B left the tension list as breadth recovered. The raw picture softened — but the regime does not step down: de-escalation is incomplete (1 of 4) and Family F stays red → ALERT confirmed. It would turn CRITICAL only with 4+ families under tension, 2+ compromised, or Family A compromised (SOXX below its 200-day/death cross) — none today.

🏭 SUPPLY CHAIN BY GROUP (average daily move, July 14)
▪️ Best: Equipment +3.4% (KLAC, Applied Materials, Teradyne, ASML) · Memory/storage +3.3% (SanDisk +5.0%, Micron +4.9%) · Servers/hardware +2.7% (Dell +7.1%, HPE +4.9%).
▪️ Middle: Energy/data center +0.9% (Eaton +3.2%; Vertiv −0.8%) · Chip design/manufacturing +0.7% (Nvidia +4.1%, Intel +4.5%; but ARM −6.0%, Qualcomm −3.2%) · Networking +0.5%.
▪️ Worst: Cloud AI/fringe −1.4% (Nebius −7.8%, CoreWeave −4.1%; Palantir +2.8%) · EDA −1.1% · Hyperscalers −0.3% (Alphabet +2.0%; Microsoft −1.5%, Oracle −2.7% at a new one-year low).
▪️ Supply-chain note: memory and equipment — Monday's epicenter — led the rebound (a technical bounce), while the speculative fringe (CoreWeave, Nebius) and EDA lagged: the recovery is not broad. Watch Micron and full Samsung results (July 30).
📊 PROBABILITIES (run July 15)
▪️ D10 (−10% correction): ACTIVE on SOXX and Nvidia (drawdowns −13.4% and −10.5%).
▪️ D20 within 30 days (SOXX ≤ 524.76): 29% — down from 32%. Dot: 🟠.
▪️ D30 within 90 days (SOXX ≤ 459.17): 12% — down from 13%. Dot: 🟡.
▪️ SYS within 90 days (S&P −20%, AI at the epicenter): 5% — unchanged. Dot: 🟡.
LEDGER (from 32%): down → cooler CPI shrinks the July Fed-hike catalyst, 42%→17% (−1.5); SOXX drawdown back to −13.4%, now −7.6% from the −20% trigger (−1); universe breadth 61%, memory/equipment recovering (−1); credit steady, volatility calm (−0.5). Up → Family F red (extension +46.8%) with a binding floor; the canaries didn't join (−6.4 pts relative), Oracle at a new low, CoreWeave −4% (+0.5); four distribution days and a light-volume bounce, no capitulation (+0.5). Net ≈ −4, capped at −3 by the historical anchors → 32%→29%. Anchors (dot-com, v4.2): with D10 active + Family F red + extension >40%, floor P(D20/30d) ≥15% (respected at 29%); net cut ≤3 pp per run (respected); a low VIX gave no downward adjustment; a rally alone does not cut the odds — the reduction is anchored to inflation, drawdown and breadth, not the bounce. Sanity: SYS (5) ≤ D30 (12); no jump >15 pp; consistent with active D10.
💳 CREDIT & MACRO

🛡️ CAPITAL-PRESERVATION NOTE (Level 2 active)
The system exists to protect capital, not to maximize return. With Level 2 active, discipline on levels matters more than forecasting. De-escalation is 1 of 4: no new distribution day in the last five sessions (fails — two on Monday); SOXX above its 50-day for 3+ sessions (fails — only one); a valid rebound follow-through (not before July 17); breadth improving (only partly). With ~47% of "air" still under prices, the risk of exiting late is real. Operating decisions remain the reader's, ideally with a licensed advisor.
